About Carolein Smit

Carolein Smit (Amersfoort, 1960) is a Dutch sculptor whose figurative ceramics combine close observation with an unsettling imagination. She studied at St. Joost in Breda from 1979 to 1984. Animals, skeletons and human figures recur in her work, often adorned with elaborate surfaces and colourful glazes. Fairy tales, religion and old legends inform a world in which tenderness, vulnerability and mortality coexist. Minute perforations, spikes and intricate ornament make the surface an essential part of each sculpture. In 2010, Kunsthal Rotterdam presented more than sixty of her sculptures in Skin and Hair. Her exhibition history also includes Myth and Mortality at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and L’Amour Fou at the Grassi Museum in Leipzig in 2018, followed by an exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris in 2022. Her work invites sustained looking: familiar figures gradually reveal unexpected emotional and symbolic tensions.
