Unique work, 1/1

Dama del pintalabios is a unique alabaster sculpture by Gerard Mas. The portrait combines a carefully carved, historically resonant form with the contemporary detail suggested by its title. The natural character of alabaster remains visible throughout the surface. Measuring 60 × 35 × 25 cm, this is a unique work, numbered 1/1, and is offered directly from a private collection. Its scale and frontal presence make it suitable for viewing from several angles. Gerard Mas is a Barcelona-based sculptor whose own account links his figurative language to his earlier work in restoration. He uses materials including alabaster, and often brings a contemporary or ironic element into forms that recall art history.

About Gerard Mas

Gerard Mas (born 1976 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols) is a Spanish sculptor based in Barcelona. His experience in restoration informs an approach in which close observation, precise modelling and references to art history meet contemporary humour. Late Gothic and Renaissance portraits are an important starting point, particularly in his female busts. A familiar historical pose may be interrupted by an everyday object or gesture, creating a dialogue between past and present. He works in a range of materials, including carved stone and wood, polychrome resin, ceramics and bronze. These choices belong to specific projects rather than a single medium used throughout his practice. His figurative sculpture combines an academic command of form with irony and visual poetry. In 2015 he received the Fundació Vila Casas sculpture prize; the foundation subsequently presented his exhibition Brut Nature at Can Framis in 2016. His artist website documents the different strands of this practice.
