About Matías Sánchez

Matías Sánchez (born 1972 in Tübingen, Germany) is a self-taught painter who lives and works in Seville, Spain. His practice combines expressive brushwork, vivid colour and richly worked surfaces. Figures, animals and fragments of contemporary imagery appear in compositions that move between figuration and abstraction. Humour and a sometimes unsettling atmosphere coexist in his painted worlds. Rather than using a subject merely to tell a story, Sánchez places the act of painting, colour and composition at the centre of his work. His references span art history and popular culture; artists such as Philip Guston, George Grosz, Otto Dix and Jean-Michel Basquiat form part of this context. He has presented solo exhibitions at institutions including CAC Málaga. His work is held in public and private collections, including CAC Málaga and the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville.
