Title
Curved Beam I

Curved Beam I by Robert Steng is a wooden sculpture built around a broad curved form and open centre. Visible grain and shifts in tone make the material part of the composition. Steng trained as a cabinetmaker; his practice explores geometry, perspective and the natural structure of wood. This work is offered directly from a private collection, independently of the artist or galleries representing him. The accompanying certificate names the work and records its dimensions as 59 × 52 × 36 cm.

About Robert Steng

Robert Steng (born 1972 in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany) makes wooden reliefs and sculptural compositions in which material, geometry and perception meet. He trained as a cabinetmaker between 1992 and 1995, worked in theatre set construction in Berlin and later studied cultural sciences in Tübingen. His knowledge of wood and precise assembly is central to the work. Used surfaces, grain, cracks and differences in colour remain visible rather than being concealed. In some reliefs, a shallow construction creates the impression of substantial beams, drawers or volumes projecting into space. Galerie La Ligne describes this play with depth as a form of trompe-l’œil. The eye reads weight and thickness while the object can be only a few centimetres deep. His practice therefore connects craft with questions about how we perceive an image or an object. His work is held in collections including ZKM Karlsruhe, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the Edwin Scharff Museum in Neu-Ulm.
